Last October I travelled to Caracas in Venezuela to perform in the European Young Soloists Festival. I was there on invitation of the Dutch Embassy together with musicians from France, Italy, Spain and the UK. My main performance was the concert in the Simon Bolivar Hall, in which I played the cello concerto by Schumann with the Simon Bolivar Orchestra and conductor Jesus Uzcategui. Apart from that I also played a short recital outside in a square, I gave public masterclasses and an Alexander Technique talk and organised a cello ensemble. It was very inspiring to see the world famous music-education program ‘ El Sistema’ from up close and work with their gifted and motivated students. It was an amazing experience playing my favourite concerto as a soloist with orchestra and as much as that I enjoyed making so many new friends as well. Music doesn’t know borders and is an universal language, this become more apparent to me as I met more and more incredible people throughout the week. I can’t wait to go back!
